The Village Halloween Parade never fails to amaze me with the level of creativity and effort on the part of the participants. On my way out of the park after the concert I anticipated this moment was about to happen so I asked the parents of both kids if I could shoot their kids - both were very cool about it ;-) Perhaps it was also the vibe of the closing song of the Crosby and Nash concert we had all just heard and sang along to.....

This guy was seen and captured on Coney Island's Surf Ave before the start of the 2011 Mermaid Parade. He is standing in front of The Freak Bar - a place I later returned to along with some of my other fellow jellyfish who marched in the parade this year ;-)

Sitting in The WhiteHorse on the day before the end of the world I was discussing the music of my youth with a friend over a glass of beer when in walked this gent proudly wearing his Dylan sweatshirt. We exchanged some small talk about the connection "the poet of my generation" had to the place we were in and the fact that he was about to turn 70 in 4 days. On the 24th I was down in Virginia's Eastern Shore but I remembered to play one of my favorite songs of his that day.

I was running late for work one morning and did not get a seat on the N out of Astoria so I stood by the door of my car and this is is what I saw as we approached Queens Plaza - the light was amazing. Ordinarily this building is just another ugly characterless glass tower eye sore in the Plaza. If I had been sitting I would have missed it.

NYC for many is just a large metropolitan area in perpetual motion. But NYC is also a community comprised of a multitude of neighborhoods best taken in on foot along the side streets away from the main drags that cater to the tourists and suburbanites. It especially comes alive in the Spring when the natives are out and about enjoying all that it has to offer, like a sunny spot to enjoy some conversation and a bite to eat al fresco from a sidewalk vendor.
